About the Book

This text is specifically designed to meet the needs of those teaching and learning interviewing and diagnostic skills in clinical, counselling, and school psychology, counselor education, licensed clinical social workers, and other programs preparing mental health professionals. It offers a rich array of practical, hands-on, class- and workshop-tested role-playing and didactic exercises. The profiles included throughout provide students/trainees with a wealth of information about each client's feelings, thoughts, actions, and relationship patterns on which to draw as they proceed through the different phases of the initial interview, one playing the client and one the interviewer. Each client profile is followed by exercises thathighlight attending, asking open and closed questions, engaging in reflective listening, responding to nonverbal behavior, making empathetic comments, summarizing, redirecting, supportively confronting, and commenting on process. This second edition is based on the new diagnostic system (DSM-5-TR) and all profiles and case examples are updated. Throughout, the author emphasizes the importance of understanding diversity and respecting the client's perceptions, and of reflecting on the ways in which the interviewer's own identity influences both the process of interviewing and that of diagnosis. This text is essential for both students and practitioners of clinical psychology, counselling, psychiatry, nursing, social work, and other allied professions.

Review :
"This book brings the art of diagnosis to life through a diverse collection of case vignettes that span a variety of age, culture and diagnoses. It is as practical as it is thorough, providing the reader with the fundamentals of diagnosis and advanced concepts in trauma-informed clinical care. So much more than a collection of case studies, the exercises, supportive coaching, and useful reference tables are user-friendly and suitable across theoretical models, therapeutic settings and disciplines. I recommended it highly for instructors, clinical supervisors and students alike." Dr. LeAnn E. Bruce, LCSW, Adjunct Professor, Western Kentucky University, USA "Dr. Pearl Berman has written a text that not only meets the highest standards for academic writing but also translates complex concepts into understandable prose. Her immense experience with patients who have endured trauma enables her to include numerous case examples that illustrate the degree of suffering of those who have known the fearsome side of life but also the road to healing. This book will aid the practitioner in assessing trauma and responding with skill and compassion. It’s not an exaggeration to say countless lives will be blessed." Victor Vieth, JD, MA, Chief Program Officer for Education & Research, Zero Abuse Project, USA "Preparing students to provide mental health services in the 21st century requires the level of direct interviewing and diagnostic skills presented by Dr. Berman. This book offers straightforward clinical practice skills and strategies for students as well as guidance for instructors. The case examples address a broad range of diversity issues. Thankfully this book not only pays it forward in preparing the next generation of practitioners but supports those in current practice with very real expertise." Viola Vaughan-Eden, PhD, MSW, MJ, Professor & PhD Social Work Director, Norfolk State University, USA; President Emerita, American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children; President Emerita, National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence "The U.S. grapples with a mental health crisis, depending on a skilled workforce of allied health professionals. This book is a valuable tool for training professionals in conducting comprehensive and efficient intake and diagnostic interviews. Successful interviews provide the foundation for an accurate diagnosis, meaningful client engagement, and effective treatment planning. The diverse case histories, paired with the experiential and skill-building approach integrates proven teaching strategies with cultural complexity that mirror real-life. This book provides professionals and trainees with the essential information and practice opportunities needed for building clinical competence." Heather J. Risser, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, USA "This comprehensive textbook is highly recommended for both the clinical student, as well as the instructor and clinical supervisor within the numerous disciplines of education and clinical practice. The client profiles and exercises help the student strengthen their clinical skills while providing opportunities for the instructor or supervisor to guide and enhance the learning experience. While this textbook is replete with wonderful case studies, it also provides quick access for the student to review specific areas regarding clinical diagnosis, as well as thought issues and cultural backgrounds, and interviewing skills." Nada Yorke, LCSW, Owner of Yorke Consulting, USA
