About the Book

This book explores the long-term origins of populist Euroscepticism. Taking a historical perspective to move beyond explaining present-day expressions of opposition to the European Union in isolation, this book reveals the historical sedimentation of the several ways and forms taken over decades by opposition towards European integration. As such, this approach – with contributions from across disciplines - explains not just the past of Euroscepticism, but also its current nature and future prospects. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European History, European Politics and Studies and more broadly to Political Science, International Relations, the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Review :
"Brexit and Britain’s skepticism and ultimate disenchantment with membership in the European Union have been much-discussed subjects. Much less so is Populist anti-Europeanism, thought to be a relatively new phenomenon. Though increasingly reported by journalists over the last few years, there has been no major study devoted to it across the major European states until now. In this volume, 20 scholars from several countries have sought to define its emergence, appeal, and development and determine the commonalities among the several movements, parties, and groups that embrace it..." --N. Greene, Wesleyan University, USA January 2025 Vol. 62 No. 5 issue of CHOICE Reviews: Recommended - Advanced undergraduates through faculty.
