About the Book

Rotary Drum: Fluid Dynamics, Dimensioning Criteria, and Industrial Applications provides in-depth analysis of fluid dynamics in rotary drums. In addition, it provides analysis on the different configurations, including nonconventional ones, diverse industrial applications, and comparison with competing dryer types, as well as the modeling of these devices. Covering important aspects of fluid dynamics in rotary drums, which directly influence the drying performance, the book also considers the significant cost of conventional rotary dryers. It takes into account the scale-up of rotary dryers and the control of product quality during processing, which can leave the final product overdried and overheated, wasting thermal energy. The book serves as a useful reference for researchers, graduate students, and engineers in the field of drying technology.

Table of Contents:
1. Introduction.  2. Direct-Heat Rotary Dryers.  3. Nonconventional Rotary Dryers.  4. Fluid Dynamics and Modeling of Heat and Mass Transfer in Rotary Drums.

Review :
“This book provides a comprehensive overview of the existing literature and recent advances in the design, dimensioning, and modelling of rotating drums. It covers the main operating parameters, geometric configurations, and offers a useful compilation of design equations in Chapter 2, establishing a strong theoretical foundation and understanding of operating principles. Chapter 3 explores the development of novel configurations aimed at improving performance, including the innovative “roto-aerated” rotating dryer, which has been successfully applied in processing fruit residues. Chapter 4 focuses on modelling fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer within rotating drums. The CFD and DEM numerical simulations provide insights into physical phenomena crucial for scale-up and process optimization. Both distributed and lumped parameter models are applied to describe drying processes in rotating drums. The content of this book is engaging to chemical, mechanical, and food engineers working in both research and industry.” - Maria do Carmo Ferreira, Chemical Engineering Department, Federal University of São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil
