About the Book

Life Is Free, Information Is Not. LIFIIN. Here's the proof: About 270 days after your parents made love, you were born. You didn't do a thing, and had life given to you--whether you wanted it or not. Yet it took, on average, 6,574 days (18 years) for you to become an adult and get a basic education. Or 8,035 days (22 years) to get a college education. Or 10,592 days (29 years) to get a PhD in physics. Or up to 12,418 days (34 years) to get an MD in a medical specialty. The following LIFIIN table shows the contrasts as ratios. First, it sets human pregnancy of 270 days equal to one (1). Then by dividing 270 into 6,574 days (18 years) we get 24. Thus it is 24 times as long as one's length of gestation to achieve basic education, a high-school diploma. For a college degree it is 30 times longer, for a PhD in physics it is 39 times longer and for some medical specialties 46 times longer. Clearly, for individuals getting knowledge is difficult while getting a life is not. Getting life is free; getting education (information, knowledge) is really hard work. Why? Length (days) Ratio .. to get .. Effort Required 270 1 a life (length of pregnancy) none - FREE 6,574 24 basic education some 8,035 30 college degree more 10,592 39 PhD in physics greater 12,418 46 MD in medical specialty greatest Table 0.0 Life Is Free, Information Is Not (LIFIIN). Anthropologists tell us that humans have had our sized brains for about 150,000 years. Yet written language only began about 5,000 years ago--when civilization began. So, our ancestors even with our-sized brains took over 145,000 years to develop writing? That is about 30 times longer than the entire history of civilization! Clearly, for our species, learning how to write--a form of developing information and knowledge--is much more difficult than getting life. Why?
