About the Book

Immigrant in Peril is the tragic and heartwarming account of Carl Tangeman's immigrant adventure. When his ship blew off course in a ferocious storm on the Atlantic Ocean, he began his heroic journey from New Orleans to New York across the American frontier. He faced a life-threatening disaster, nativism from Americans, learning a new language, finding a job and the challenge of understanding a different culture. The author of Immigrant in Peril is a great-great granddaughter of Carl Tangeman. As a young descendent, she learned of Carl's adventures from older family members. She grew up in the same township where he settled on the Great Plains of Kansas in 1880. She has been a champion of young people's causes as an educator, child advocate, author and social worker. This is her first young adult historical fiction.

Review :
In writing, IMMIGRANT IN PERIL, Cheryl Clay has given a beautiful gift to her grandchildren, forwhom she pieced together thestory of their great-great-great-great grandfather'scoming to America (the United States) in the 1840s. The book begins with anactual letter of farewell from Carl Tangaman's father as Carl embarks on a tortuous searchfor a new life in a new land. Throughout thestory, we hear Carl'svoice, we ache for his losses, we marvel at his perseverance, andwe admire his values. What a treasure this book is.Would that we allcould know as much about our own ancestors. -Shaila Van Sickle, author of Seven Characters in Search of an Author"
