About the Book

The story is about one of the greatest heroes in recent history - Nelson Mandela. He was a son, father, husband, grandfather, activist, leader, prisoner, freedom fighter, statesman, icon, humanitarian, reconciler and much more. He inspired and influenced millions of people not only in his country, South Africa, but in Africa and the rest of the world. The very nature of Nelson Mandela is to be admired because he cared not for his own luxury or safety but for the freedom of those who were oppressed for hundreds of years. First by the Dutch, then the British and finally by the Afrikaners under the evil system called 'Apartheid' - a system of segregation by race. These systems denounced all those who were not white to belong to an inferior race and were treated thus. Nelson Mandela brought freedom to a nation that today occupies the seat of power in Africa. He left a legacy that will benefit generations to come. He indeed united a nation of different races - African, Coloured, Indian and White - multicultural societies today referred to by the phrase coined by Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu - Rainbow Nation. Nelson Mandela's example is one to be told and preserved for future generations everywhere in the world to learn from so that those atrocities borne by his people should never be repeated. The story in Thembi and Themba Learn about Nelson Mandela celebrate the life and times of Nelson Mandela. Children growing up today know of Nelson Mandela but not about him. Thembi and Themba Learn about Nelson Mandela chronicles in a fun story format, the birth of Nelson Mandela in the quaint village of Mveso and his childhood and youth spent as a member of the royal household in Qunu, a place he loved all his life. Nelson Mandela goes to school (the first one in his family) and then to University where he picks up on student politics. He then moves to Johannesburg - known as Egoli - City of Gold. From here onwards the story takes a dramatic turn that makes Nelson Mandela into the person he became. The story is told at a leisurely pace and is filled with interaction between Thembi and Themba and their mother who narrates the life of Nelson Mandela.
