About the Book

The Rolling Calf Duppy is written for a 7 to 11 age range, and is about the worst of the native Caribbean ghosts (duppies) which is often spoken about in Jamaican folklore. But while described as the souls of dead people, Rolling Calves have much in common with old world shape-shifters and roadside tricksters, and can be found in bamboo thickets and cottonwood groves. The Rolling Calf is one of the worst and most feared duppies in Jamaica, and is known for roaming through town or on lonely roads in the dead of night. The Rolling Calf Duppy focus on the night time experience of Delroy who is on his way to the local shop with his Uncle Dee. But after his uncle was forced to leave him alone for a short while, Delroy was unexpectedly confronted by a nasty Rolling Calf along the road. Left alone in the darkness and with his vivid imagination running riot, Delroy was fearful of what he might encounter. From the many stories hed been told, he knew he might see a Rolling Calf on the road and if he did, the evil beast would be looking to destroy him. Rolling Calves usually appear as a raging black bull with blazing fire for eyes and a chain that it pulls along the ground. It has a long black tail that curls over its back, and very hot flames that shoot out from its nostrils. So, while Delroy was alone on the road, he heard the sound of a chain clanking loudly as it was being dragged along. The sound was very scary, and his instincts were to run away. Then just as his uncle came back a massive black bull with red eyes and shooting flames stood before them. But before the Rolling Calf could attack them the moon started to come out, and as Rolling Calves are afraid of the moon, it disappeared back into the night. Now that the beast had gone, Delroy decided that from then on he would never be afraid of duppies again.
