About the Book

First Flame is the powerful debut short story collection by Bruce Harris. In this collection several well-rounded, memorable characters live out their lives in well-told stories that entertain and delight in situations masterfully observed and created. All the 25 stories featured in First Flame have won prizes, commendations or listings in U.K. fiction competitions. They feature the variety of people, circumstances and settings which might be expected from a varied career. There are stories with multiple voices, male and female voices, humour, narrative and different generations. First Flame has something for everyone, and can provide a useful guide to the kind of material which is likely to be successful in modern writing competitions.

About the Author :
Bruce Harris worked in teaching and educational research for over thirty years, publishing research-based articles in the national and educational press, including the Independent, the Guardian and the Times Educational Supplement. From 2000 to 2004 he was Director of the charity Exam Aid, helping fifteen to eighteen year old students with revision and exam preparation and researching into how they coped with the demands made on them during the exam years. After moving to Devon in 2003, he decided to concentrate mainly on creative writing, initially with poetry and then, in 2007, short fiction. Since then, his prizes, commendations and listing have included the Writers' Bureau (twice); Grace Dieu Writers' Circle (four times); Bridport Prize longlist (last 100 of 6000 entries), Bristol Prize shortlist (last 40 of 1500 entries), Biscuit Publishing, Milton Keynes Speakeasy, Fylde Writers, Segora, Sentinel Literary Quarterly, Southport Writers' Circle, Lichfield Writers' Circle, Exeter Writers, Brighton Writers, Waterloo Historical Short Story Competition, Cheer Reader, JB Writers' Bureau, Five Stop Story (twice), Wells Literary Festival, Swale Life, Yeovil Prize, TLC Creative, 3 into 1 story competition, and Wirral Festival of Firsts. He has also been published in Carillon, The Recusant, Winamop, Sarasvati, Fiction on the Web, Vintage Script, Running Out Of Ink, Inkapture, Alliterati, Hackwriters, Ranfurly Review, Delivered, Neonbeam, Writer's Muse, Black Rose, Fire, Morbid Outlook (Canada) and Linnet's Wings (Ireland).
