About the Book

Since the car crash, Carly hasn't changed much. She's still cynical, smoking and alienating most people. Only now she has good reason to be angry. Her crush, Dave, is heading to jail for causing the accident. Carly's best friend Suzie is wheelchair-bound and her boyfriend Aldo dead. And a stranger, Emma, died in the other car. Carly doesn't talk about Emma's death, but just like the scars on her face, it's always there.Flashbacks reveal Carly's life before, during and after the accident. She's now at university but doesn't play well with others. She's constantly tired and losing her temper, but hates her psychiatrist. She has driving lessons with calm, cute Tim, but pushes him away. And she barely tolerates her anxious mum and impatient dad, but younger brother Ben hero-worships her.Only her friendship with the irrepressible Suzie keeps her going, but after their disastrous self-piercing attempts, Carly meets counsellor Nina, who suggests she may have mild brain injuries, affecting her behaviour. Meanwhile, Dave has his court case; Carly manages to apologise to Emma's family; her surgeon decides enough glass has come out of her face to try operating, and she lets Tim a little closer. But then Ben is injured in a joy-riding accident, her parents kick her out and things hit rock-bottom. It takes everything going haywire to help her realise that maybe she can help prevent others taking the same route, and she faces her fears by talking to kids at schools about the dangers of joy-riding.

Review :
"...I always wait until the end of a book to pass judgement on a character - often they undergo a lot of development, and that's what I loved about Carly. She may start as a prickly cactus, but she doesn't stay that way. Facing Up also has a great depiction of therapy. Carly went through a pretty traumatic event, and she has a lot of external scars as well - face that still has shards of glass all through it, which would take multiple operations to fix. So she's reminded of it every day. What I DID really like was that Carly's first therapist wasn't right for her. It wasn't until she tried someone else that the therapy began to have an effect, which is something that felt so real to me. And Carly's guilt about the death of the other woman in the car accident? That was quite powerful, and raw, and one of the times I really felt for Carly." Emily Mead, The Loony Literate blog, 14 January 2016
