About the Book

Linux, in all its myriad flavors, is rapidly becoming commonplace. It can be found on embedded devices, servers, networks, and even desktops. But, how well do you know your Linux distribution? Are you fully aware of or versed in each of the programs you are installing? Can you say for certain your Linux install is secure? Do you want to know more about the software you are installing and how Linux truly operates? This book, based on the online Linux From Scratch project: http: //www.linuxfromscratch.org/, is geared towards college-level students who have a beginning understanding of Linux, no matter the Linux "flavor." It walks users through the initial host setup in a virtual environment, instructs them in basic Linux commands, and assists in downloading and compiling each and every application from source. When complete, users can proudly show off their own customized and streamlined Linux distro. Be forewarned, this is not for the faint of heart. However, successfully completing a custom LFS build will not only provide students with a remarkable sense of accomplishment, but will help them better understand the whys and hows of Linux configurations. By following this technical manual closely, users will come to better appreciate the complexities of the Linux operating system. With a customized Linux version in hand, along with the experience of compiling each and every package from source code, users will be forearmed with the knowledge needed to tackle many real-world Linux issues.
