About the Book

Spanning the Scottish Highlands, Gilded Age New York, and the contested lands of New Mexico, Land Shadows traces the rise of Murdoch McNeil-a man caught in a web of ambition, betrayal, and the seductive promise of ownership. Orphaned in the aftermath of the Highland Clearances, Murdoch claws his way into the legal elite of New York City. But his success is built on a lie: a forged deed to a vast stretch of land in New Mexico's Maxwell Land Grant. As the U.S. government sorts which land frauds to honor and which to revoke, Murdoch must uproot his family and move to New Mexico to protect his claim. Alongside him is Kewanee, a Potawatomi girl resisting the brutal assimilation of the Carlisle Indian School. Together, their fates entwine in a struggle for identity, legitimacy, and survival. Land Shadows explores how America expanded-not just through conquest, but through compromise, betrayal, and the rewriting of truth. Praise for Land Shadows "Striegel's vivid writing brings to life a sweeping story of land, legacy, and betrayal... a richly imagined historical novel with modern resonance." -BookLife by Publishers Weekly "An enlightening and thoughtful approach to how land rights were handled during another era... Highly recommended." -Ann Howard Creel, The Magic of Ordinary Days "An engrossing tale with spellbinding characters... you're watching history unfold." -Marianne Goodland, President, Denver Press Club For Educators: Land Shadows pairs well with classroom instruction on land policy, Indigenous history, and the Gilded Age. A full archive of historical sources, citations, and downloadable lesson plans are available at www.landshadows.com.

Review :
"4/5 Stars! A good read, Land Shadows exposes how far a person will go to get what he or she wants and the consequences of wanting something too much. ... This is a page-turner and presents a well-researched, enjoyable portrayal of the landscape and lifestyle of the late 1800's woven into a compelling narrative." - Patti Kidd, Reedsy "5/5 Stars! Big-hearted, confident, no less 'literary' for keeping its facts straight, Land Shadows, steeped in historical accuracy and detail, tells it like it still is while telling it like it was. That is, just as facts matter for proofreading-as-he-goes Murdoch, so too do they matter for Striegel, for whom history isn't just a dragnet of 'Just the facts, ma'am' but a patchwork of human events and desires and concerns." - John Crouse, author of DUHS and Valleys Greater Than Peaks "Streigel's historical novel Land Shadows takes the reader on a trip through 19th Century Scotland, New York and finally to New Mexico. The painstaking research gives the book the feel you're watching history unfold. It's an engrossing tale with spell-binding characters and that will keep you reading to the last, unexpected twist." -- Marianne Goodland, President, Denver Press Club "Through a captivating story and compelling characters, Striegel brings the old West back to life and lets readers view it through a new lens. This is an enlightening and thoughtful approach to how land rights were handled during another era as seen through the eyes of an ambitious family. Highly recommended for all history buffs but also those who simply enjoy a great read." -- Ann Howard Creel, author of The Magic of Ordinary Days and Mercy Road.
