About the Author:

From a crowded boat in the Mariel boatlift to the executive boardroom, Betty Viamontes defied the odds and broke the glass ceiling-proving that determination can overcome even the most unlikely beginnings.

Betty Viamontes was born in Havana, Cuba. In 1980, at the age of fifteen, she immigrated to the United States with her mother and siblings during the Mariel boatlift-one of the largest Cuban exoduses from the Port of Mariel. She arrived unable to speak English, beginning a journey that would take her from a crowded boat to the boardroom.
Mrs. Viamontes completed her graduate studies at the University of South Florida and went on to build a successful career in accounting. She also earned a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing, reflecting her commitment to both analytical and creative disciplines.

With more than twenty-five years of progressive management experience in healthcare organizations, she broke barriers and rose through the ranks to executive leadership-overcoming challenges often faced by immigrants and women, and ultimately breaking the glass ceiling in her field.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, she is an accomplished author. Her published works include Waiting on Zapote Street, an autobiographical novel with growing international reach; Candela's Secrets and Other Havana Stories, an anthology of short stories and poems; The Dance of the Rose, a memoir-style mother-daughter story; as well as numerous short stories and poems featured in newspapers and literary magazines.

Betty Viamontes is deeply committed to education and leadership. She is a frequent speaker at the University of South Florida and other professional organizations and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Hillsborough Community College. She previously served as Chair and Vice Chair of the FICPA Healthcare Conference Committee in 2017 and 2016, respectively.

As of 2026, the most recent update of this book, she has served as Chief Financial Officer of a nonprofit organization for seven years, leading significant operational transformations and working alongside the CEO to expand the organization's reach. During this time, she has also completed nineteen books, including this one, a children's book, and seventeen works based on the true stories of Cuban exiles.

She lives in Florida with her husband and family.
