About the Book

Unlock a world of learning and dynamic possibilities by illuminating the bridges that link the great writers and thinkers of the past to the great writers and thinkers of today. Using a research-based approach to deep textual analysis, Hip-Hop Language Arts provides a standards-based approach to instruction that authentically engages students while simultaneously empowering educators to meet rigorous, high-level academic objectives. From Twain to Afrika Bambaatta, Jane Austen to Jay-Z, Oliver Wendell Holmes to Rakim, and on and on, this text enables educators to achieve success by smartly harnessing the immense methodological power of hip-hop pedagogy.

About the Author :
Alan Sitomer is a California Teacher of the Year award winner, founder of The Writer's Success Academy and author of 19 books. In addition to having been an inner-city high school English teacher and former professor in the Graduate School Of Education at Loyola Marymount University, Mr. Sitomer is a nationally renowned keynote speaker who specializes in engaging underperforming students. MICHAEL CIRELLI is the Executive Director of Urban Word NYC, an award-winning youth literary arts organization, and also the author of Hip-Hop Poetry & the Classics (Milk Mug 2004), a standards-based teaching curriculum that engages the intersection between hip-hop and "classic" poetry. His first collection of poems, Lobster with Ol' Dirty Bastard (Hanging Loose, 2008), was a NY Times Best Seller for independent presses. He is a veteran of the National Poetry Slam scene, and was the only person to win the Grand Slam Finals in San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley all in the same year.

Review :
"...demonstrates the impact hip-hop can have on language arts...introduces students to the voices of Sherman Alexie, Chuck D, Gloria Anzaldá°a, Jane Austen, and Kendrick Lamar in just one unit. Check it, sample it, remix it." -- Sam Seidel, Hip Hop Genius "...this groundbreaking approach turns curricular lead to gold." -- Dr. David Kirkland, NYU
