About the Book

Hello, my name is Dixie. Who are you? Any life can be amazing, and you're about to read the story of someone very special: Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, designer of the Iowa flag! In May 1917, Dixie's design was chosen for Iowa's flag. She was fifty years old. It was an important moment for Dixie and for her state because the flag was used to identify Iowa's troops during World War I and at the U.S.-Mexico border. But the flag isn't where Dixie's story began. She had a family, and she was once a kid-just like you! My Name Is Dixie is a biography and journal for young readers. You'll learn about Dixie, the flag, and Iowa history. And you'll be encouraged to think about your history and what you want to do when you're older. What is a legacy? What will yours be? Author T. E. Waldmann-Williams and illustrator Cindy Gordon invite you to enjoy, learn, and become the person you're meant to be!

About the Author :
T. E. Waldmann-Williams, Ph.D., believes that service to God, self, family, and others is of the utmost importance. If you serve all of these, you serve your community, state, country, and world. That is why she joined Rotary International. Waldmann-Williams was raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and graduated from St. Albert High School. Her undergraduate degree is from the College of St. Mary in Omaha. She received her master's degree from the University of Nebraska and her doctorate from Union Institute and University. She worked for AT&T and established TWW Consulting LLC in 1998. Waldmann-Williams has lived in Iowa three times, in New York, in New Jersey twice, and in Nebraska. She now resides with her husband, Merrill Williams, in Knoxville, Iowa-the Sprint Car Capital of the World and home to Dixie Cornell Gebhardt and many other incredible people! She hopes this book serves you in your journey through life. Cindy Gordon is an Iowa artist who was born in Fort Dodge and raised in the Des Moines area. She has drawn since she was young and considers herself self-taught. Gordon was also greatly influenced by her uncles, two distinguished art teachers. She worked for many years doing portraits in graphite until she learned to use watercolors. Gordon refreshes and adds to her skills by taking classes with private teachers, attending workshops, and studying with other artists. In 2009, Gordon became a signature member of the Iowa Watercolor Society. She has been a member since 1995.

Review :
"Being a young girl can be challenging, with self-doubt and wondering if you are 'good enough' often on the mind. My Name Is Dixie is a great interactive book for girls, which not only tells a story of historical interest but includes guided journaling that can help girls boost their self-esteem and face everyday challenges with confidence. This book can help youngsters understand and celebrate their own unique personalities. The narrative voice creates an adventure in the reader's mind, which makes the main character come alive and then leads them through their own reflections. The story conveys life messages such as believing in oneself and one's abilities and the importance of perseverance. I am proud to be the great-grandniece of Dixie and am honored to know that her life story will be shared with and inspire others through this book." - Nancy Johnston Toll "A thoughtful and innovative work designed to engage young learners by introducing them to the important historical work of Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, while inspiring them to discover their own history and explore their path into the future. The author has created a genius blend of a biography, historical reference, and journal to guide the reader on their path. The illustrations that accompany this work are a true gift that brings the story to life." - Marla Suter, Iowa Society DAR State Regent 2020-2022 "Dixie herself couldn't have compiled a better biography! T. E. Waldmann-Williams is to be commended for incorporating questions throughout the narrative, creating an atmosphere of curiosity within the reader. This literary style is in concert with Dixie's life work in the P.E.O. and her desire to motivate others to greater understanding. Well done!" - Angie Heartsill, Owner of Farmyard Fancies and Committee Organizer of Iowa Flag Day Ceremonies "I felt you invited me into your parlor and I got to sit with Dixie and hear her story through your questions. This is a great study guide for kids, and it shows the value of questions. The illustrations are really well done. I felt like I traveled through time." - Mike Leary, President Leary Communications "My Name Is Dixie definitely integrates learning about Iowa's and Dixie's story with challenging the reader to reflect, start dreaming, and ultimately set personal goals (something lots of us need to do, not just fifth, sixth, and seventh graders)." - Patty Butwin, Retired Consultant and Middle School Teacher "I enjoyed the book very much. As a retired teacher, I am happy to see the book involving the reader with pertinent questions for the student to answer that apply to them personally but are based on Dixie's life." - Pat Schrad, Retired Middle School Language Arts Teacher
