About the Book

Whether you are in recovery or simply looking to improve your life, Edward Bear's latest "Tyler tape" will show you how to overcome your outwardly centered needs and concentrate on the inner work of healing and growth. The Seven Deadly Needs is the sequel to Edward Bear's previous work, The Dark Night of Recovery. Set in a conversational format, the book is written as a series of tape-recorded sessions between a mentor, Tyler, and his somewhat resistant pupil, Edward Bear. Each session deals with one of what Tyler calls the Seven Deadly Needs: the Need to Know, to Be Right, to Get Even, to Look Good, to Judge, to Keep Score, and to Control. Because these needs are outwardly focused, they force us to act in ways that are not true to ourselves, and often lead to addiction, isolation and unhappiness. This book will help guide you around some of the larger potholes in life's often-hectic road. In form not unlike Platonic dialogues, the seven chapters deal with many everyday issues that confine rather than expand our experiences of reality. These obstacles often keep us from an awareness of how rich our lives can be. Through the course of the book, you will learn how to overcome these deadly needs, how to see the possibilities open to each of us, and how to view each day as a wonderful opportunity for living. Although The Seven Deadly Needs is Twelve-Step oriented, the principles and practices are universal, and the tone is both irreverent and charming.

About the Author :
Edward Bear was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Los Angeles, and had a lifetime love affair with baseball. After a brief stint in the minor leagues followed by years of dead-end jobs, he worked at Hewlett-Packard for nearly thirty years. Mr. Bear lived high in the Rocky Mountains with his wife, played a vintage Martin guitar, and wrote in the time the gods and goddesses gave him. Though he passed away in 2006, his words and wisdom live on. To learn more about the author, visit edwardbear.net.

Review :
This book is destined to be another spiritual classic by the author of The Dark Night of Recovery. In The Seven Deadly Needs, the irreverent Tyler continues the dialogue with humor and wisdom, this time illustrating the fact that emotional and spiritual transformation consists of removing obstacles or 'needs' that present us from living as the spiritual beings we are. It is an enlightening and entertaining 'manual' with more steps toward health and wholeness. - Judith G. Dowling, Psy.D., clinical psychologist. A wonderful, thought-provoking read, filled with guidance from one who understands the path toward absolute surrender. Simple and clear, it provides guidance and a way to see beyond our shortcomings - and to learn principles that foster love of self and of others. - Linda C. Wilson, M.S.W., C.A.C.I.I. The Seven Deadly Needs is a delightful book about how to get free, how to deal with fear, and how to surrender to the Divine Intelligence that connects us all. It takes a closer look at how our 'deadly needs' are obstacles that keep us from enjoying life. I plan to recommend this book to all my clients. - Donna Strickland, MD, RM, CS, national speaker, organizational development consultant.
