About the Book

For 30 years Michael S. Lewis, MD, traveled to 50 countries observing up-close and personal people and animals, exotic and ordinary places, architectural wonders, and vast and small landscapes. With the world bombarded by ugly news and images, the beauty and professional skill of this collection of photographs make the initial impact, while the accompanying quotes provide the reminder that the world is still filled with splendor and that there is dignity in diversity. A photo of Cambodian landmine victims is intensified by the words of Bob Dylan, while other images are enhanced by similar wisdom from Winston Churchill, Rumi, Marcel Proust, and others. The images in this collection communicate the awe of living together on a shared Earth, from a sunset over the forest of Botswana to a vintage 1950s Chevy in Havana to a wonderland beneath the Red Sea. As a concrete manifestation of his interest in opening eyes, a portion of the profits from One World: A View of Seven Continents is donated to the Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) which has restored sight to more than 200,000 patients in Tibet, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, and Sikkim and now has expanded into Ghana. To learn more about HCP or to donate additionally, visit www.cureblindness.org.

About the Author :
Author and photographer Michael S. Lewis, M.D. started taking photographs more than 30 years ago when he was stationed in the United Kingdom as an orthopedic surgeon in the United States Air Force. At that time he was able to travel throughout Europe, as well as East Africa, Nepal and India. Since then his passion for photography has only expanded. His images have been published in a number of books and magazines, including the "Field Museum of Natural History Bulletin" and "Nature Photographer." His photographs have been shown in several galleries and exhibitions, including Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts; the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California; the Chicago Cultural Center in Chicago, Illinois; and Children's Hospital of Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. For more information please visit www.oneworldthebook.com where, among other things, a series of engrossing multi-media travelogues written and narrated by Dr. Lewis seek to expand the experience of community. There is also a place where visitors can share their own "One World" thoughts and photographs plus free podcasts, additional photography, and an opportunity to purchase "One World" merchandise. Just as a portion of the book's profits will be contributed to the Himalayan Cataract Project, so too does HCP benefit from the sale of this merchandise.
