About the Book

WINNER: Bronze Medal for Best Book in Performing Arts from the Independent Publisher Book Awards (The IPPYs)! Bruce Cockburn has enthralled audiences with his insightful lyrics and innovative guitar playing for over half a century. Hit songs like "Wondering Where the Lions Are," "If I Had a Rocket Launcher," and "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" are just part of the story. In You Get Bigger as You Go: Bruce Cockburn's Influence and Evolution, musician and writer M.D. Dunn takes the reader on a humorous and obsessive quest to track Cockburn's significant cultural footprint. Interviews with producers, musicians, activists, fans, as well as Bruce's career-long manager, the legendary Bernie Finkelstein, and with the enigmatic Mr. Cockburn himself form the core of this critical assessment and appreciation. In these conversations, Cockburn and friends celebrate a life of music and social engagement. You Get Bigger as You Go: Bruce Cockburn's Influence and Evolution is the perfect beginner's guide to the music and the artist, and a fun addition to any fan's library. Photographs from archivist Daniel Keebler span decades and show Cockburn in his natural habitat, on stage and in studio.

Review :
"The writer, musician, and educator Mark D. Dunn has released a book which may be seen as the definitive work on the career of Bruce Cockburn. Nurturing a love for Cockburn that was ignited while in his teens, Dunn has expanded the passion of the youthful inner fan into a multi-faceted, multi-purposed, and incredibly complete work. Containing source material that includes direct quotations from interviews conducted with Cockburn from 2015 to 2021, as well as interviews with a variety of his artistic and business collaborators, You Get Bigger As You Go paints a vivid and comprehensive picture of the career of this iconic Canadian artist." --Bryan Williston, The Spill Magazine "The guitar tutorials -- yes, there are two -- are typical of You Get Bigger as You Go: Bruce Cockburn's Influence and Evolution, an atypical book. It is written as a long, gracefully meandering essay, or as a biography that considers its subject from hundreds of feet above: Big picture, but with an elegant intimacy and, occasionally, unexpected instruction." --Brad Wheeler, The Globe and Mail "Exhaustive interviews with Cockburn cover topics as wide-ranging as the creative process, his political activism and Christian faith, celebrity, and his curious affection for firearms. Dozens of other one-on-ones include such notables as his long-time manager Bernie Finkelstein, the guitarists Don Ross and Colin Linden, the electric violinist Hugh Marsh, and the Toronto luthier Linda Manzer, who has built guitars for Cockburn since the 1980s." -- David Wilson, The Literary Review of Canada "Dunn takes us on a fascinating journey through Cockburn's entire career, providing erudite opinions, interesting facts, and a full understanding of what exactly makes Bruce Cockburn and his music so special and loved by such a devoted fanbase. This is a shining example of great music and culture writing." --Allister Thompson, musician and book editor From podcasts, videos, and more reviews, check out: www.fermatapress.com
