The American Accent Guide

This is the 3rd edition of the world-acclaimed The American Accent Guide. The American Accent Guide provides comprehensive training on the standard American accent. The materials for this program consist of a book and accompanying streaming audio. The book provides a link and an access code for the audio, which can then be streamed on any digital device. The methods and principles of this program are based on the belief that an efficient way to become a clear and effective speaker in a non-native language is to gain an understanding of the phonology (sound system) of that language. The American Accent Guide addresses the entire sound system of American English and gives thorough attention to each of its elements. These elements are: Intonation Stress Rhythm Individual vowel sounds Individual consonant sounds The program found in The American Accent Guide addresses each of these elements through a variety of engaging, interactive exercises that use everyday language in situations ranging from casual to technical and from informal to professional. Although each section is complete in and of itself, exercises do reinforce skills addressed in previous sections. Typical users of The American Accent Guide include universities, colleges, language schools, speech-language pathologists, ESL instructors, and individual learners. The program is appropriate for students representing all foreign language backgrounds, given that they possess at least a low-intermediate command of the English language. The Approach The American Accent Guide introduces the elements of American English speech in the most logical sequence, integrating each of them into natural contexts. Beverly A. Lujan's desire to specialize in training the American English accent was sparked by growing up in a bilingual family and solidified during her undergraduate studies in Speech-Language Pathology and Linguistics at San Diego State University. As a result of this passion, she went on to further her studies by achieving a Master's of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Utah. While attending the university, she also served as the Vice President of the Student Association. Language development, voice, articulation, and phonology are all among Beverly's areas of expertise. Over the course of her professional career, Beverly has provided American accent and communication training to international students at Hawthorne University and provided supervision to graduate students in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Utah. She has conducted seminars for associations and has presented at state and national conferences, sharing her expertise in improved communication through accent training. Additionally, she is the founder of the Lingual Arts Institute for Training the American Accent. Beverly provides coaching services and conducts seminars and webinars for her clients, among whom she counts professionals representing a wide range of fields and organizations. Over the course of more than 25 years, Beverly has helped thousands of learners from a variety of backgrounds, countries, and cultures to become clear and effective English-language communicators.
