About the Book

A grizzled old fisherman raises a boy of mysterious origins on the shores of the spectacular, resource-rich but unforgiving Prince William Sound. Sven dubs the boy Orca, after the whales who bring the baby boy to shore, and gives him as good an upbringing as he can, teaching him the ways of the sea. Orca grows up learning to set nets and read from a first aid manual; he spends his hours listening to the tall tales of garrulous sailors and the sound of rain on water, until the crucial summer when Miss Priscilla M. Braithewaite of the Alaska Department of Social Services, Division of Child Welfare, comes to pay a call and perhaps change his life forever. Jones' novel is illustrated with numerous wash drawings by noted Alaska artist Susan Ogle.

About the Author :
Tim Jones grew up in Western New York and eventually found his way to Alaska where he has lived for more than 40 years. He worked in journalism for one newspaper or another describing his career as a meteoric rise from the Wall Street Journal to the Nome Nugget. Over time he has also been captain of a tour boat, a commercial fisherman, an oil spill response consultant, a reporter and editor at newspapers and magazines. He has also spent time living alone in the Alaska Bush and made several ocean voyages on small sailboats. He is the author of six books and numerous periodical articles. A book now in production about the first 10 years of the Iditarod Trail Sled Race contains several of his articles. He is currently (2014) at work on a novel. He also maintains a blog at alaskaatitude.blogspot.com Artist Susan Ogle lives and works in Cordova, Alaska. Before moving there in 1987, she and her husband spent ten years paddling their kayak in Prince William Sound. They guided guests on trips for part of the time, but their true mission was exploration and discovery. They moved to Cordova to become full-time Sound residents. Owners of a small bookstore named Orca Book and Sound, they promote reading, art, and environmental causes. Susan paints every afternoon, usually large oils of the flora and fauna of the area, but she is sometimes tempted to illustrate a story she loves.

Review :
"Our good friend Nigel and his team 'Nancy' are at it again, this time with Mike. Mike had a bad accident, but through determination and will, he is on his way to Nome with all his doggie buddies." --Jon Van Zyle, official artist of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race "I know Nancy Yoshida, the bold and resourceful woman from North Dakota that ran Alaska's 1000 mile Iditarod! But what about Mike, her hard pulling husky born to the trail? Read Mike Races Again, and discover the bond between musher and sled dog--and how hard work, perseverance and a love of adventure are traits shared by Nancy and her sled dogs. I like real stories with strong and happy characters, and you will too." --Joe Runyan 1989 Iditarod Champ "Mike Races Again is a truly delightful story written from the perspective of Nigel, one of Mike's Alaskan Husky teammates. Having Nigel tell Mike's story is not only enjoyable reading, but also an up close view into the ups and downs (and definitely wonders) of sled dog racing." --Lynn Chalmers, Ph.D., Professor and Graduate Director, Special Education, University of North Dakota "Tim Jones grounds this sea-based adventure with a touch of realism... His novel for young adults borders on the magical." --Debbie Carter, Fairbanks Daily News-Miner "Our good friend Nigel and his team 'Nancy' are at it again, this time with Mike.
