About the Book

The first comprehensive account of the fascinating story of the Edwin Fox, the eighth oldest intact ship in the world and last surviving nineteenth century merchantman sailing ship. Following her construction and launch in 1853 on the Ganges in India she endured many mishaps including terrible storms, collisions with other ships, groundings and fires on her numerous voyages around the world during her 30 years as a sailing ship. Her diverse cargoes included saltpetre, tea, India pale ale, cotton, sugar, rice and other grains. She also carried human cargoes, including English and French troops to the Crimean War, Chinese coolies to Cuba, convicts to Western Australia and immigrants to Nelson, Wellington, and Canterbury. After her sailing days ended she was utilised as a freezer ship for the burgeoning frozen mutton export trade from Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, Gisborne and Bluff before ending up in Picton in 1897 for this purpose and was subsequently used as a coal hulk for some 60 years. Another episode in the Edwin Fox saga began during the 1960s when various enthusiastic individuals and organisations took an interest in trying to restore her. Despite being refloated she was 'temporarily' beached in adjacent Shakespeare Bay for the next 19 years. A second wave of local movers and shakers in the Edwin Fox Society managed to get her refloated and moved back to Picton and after much hard work she is now preserved in a purpose-built dock on the Picton foreshore adjacent to the Edwin Fox Centre.
