About the Book

What do those flap things on the wings do? How many flights can a pilot operate in a day? What is "fly by wire"? What is a "Low Cost" Airline? What are those numbers at the end of the runway for? The answers to all of these, and many other frequently asked questions are in this book Although much has been written about the airline industry by aerodynamicists, engineers and industry watchers there is very little written by the pilots themselves who go and fly the aircraft every day of their working lives. Peter Sneller explains in simple terms how a modern airliner works and also a little about the airline industry. Take-off! is a fascinating read for anyone who has ever wanted to ask the pilot a question.

Table of Contents:
Part One: Power!, Wings and Things, Weather, Pressurisation, The Aircraft, The Business, Crew, The Simulator, Airports and Air Traffic Control, Edinburgh to Heathrow. Part Two: The main airliners you are likely to see.

About the Author :
The author studied Mechanical Engineering and joined Shell as a trainee Drilling Engineer, spending 11 years in the oil business. But his passion was flying and he secured his private pilot's licence in 1985. Soon afterwards he decided to change careers to become a professional pilot and gained his commercial pilot's licence in 1990. His first flying position was with a small regional airline called Business Air flying the Saab 340 turbo prop out of Aberdeen and East Midlands. After two years was promoted to Captain. However, he was very keen to progress onto jets and in 1997 he moved to British Midland as a First Officer flying the Boeing 737 based at Heathrow. After a couple of years he was promoted back into the Captain's seat and in 2002 changed aircraft onto the Airbus 320. Peter Sneller has spent the last 10 years happily flying the A320 (including the 319 and 321) which has taken him all over Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
