About the Book

When reluctant time traveller Benedict helps the infamous jewel thief, known as Black Rook, escape from the cells underneath Bow Street police station he is 'appointed' the man's apprentice and accomplice in a daring plan to steal the world's most famous diamond, the Star of Banhavgarh. Under Black Rook's tutelage, Benedict will undergo the most intensive training but will it be enough to save him from the trials that lie ahead? 'Back' in the present day in the sleepy Devon town of Appleton Marsh, Benedict's best friends, Fin McKinlay and Poppy Knocker, begin to notice changes in their friend. But who can he confide in? A mysterious stranger directs him to a book, Liber de Tranquillitate, and it provides some guidance, explaining the Seven Laws of Time Travel, but it also forewarns of terrible dangers. As his widowed mother fights to keep the family home from the clutches of the evil money-lender Frank Angel, Benny realises that the answer to all of their problems could lie a hundred and fifty years in the past but he will need all his courage and guile to outwit his mentor, Black Rook in a game of double-cross and double-double-cross. While Poppy and Fin race to discover the truth about their friend, Inspector Morrell of Great Scotland Yard is closing in on the master jewel thief. The climax is a thrilling cat and mouse chase between Black Rook and Benedict through the slums of the notorious St Giles Rookery where the master and his apprentice will pit their skills against each other in a fight for the Star which, surely, only one of them will survive. Within the pages of this book lurk man-eating tigers, vampires, hordes of rats, fearsome warriors, ferocious dogs and worse. If you're wondering what could possibly be worse than these things, twelve year old Benedict is about to find out.
