About the Book

They came from India - The Narrandes Family by Mansingh (Jaipal) Narrandes is an inspirational chronicle of a remarkable Indian family and their quest for social, political and economic justice for their people in white-dominated Natal, South Africa. Serendipity leads to a discovery of priceless and unusual material in a family flat in London and constitutes the backbone of a valuable community and family document. This heart warming pictorial narrative is a long overdue tribute to the Indentured and an inspiring human document, the first of its kind to give a penetrating, unique insight into the lives of the labourers from India. Author Jaipal Narrandes also highlights the huge contribution of his own ancestors to the cultural, educational, sports, commercial and agricultural life of Natal. The Narrandes Brothers soon acquired an expert understanding of the problems of the underprivileged - Blacks, Coloureds and Indians. Sports lovers from their schooldays in the Mother country, they founded the first cricket and football associations for Indians. This scrupulously researched work, which covers practically every aspect of Indian Indentured life with great skill and in a most engaging style, was enthusiastically received when it first appeared in a limited edition. In the view of some literary and historical pundits is destined for best-seller status.

About the Author :
The author of this book and his wife were born in South Africa and are now British citizens however they remain deeply attached to their original roots -India, the ancient land of their ancestors and South Africa, to whose economic development and political liberation their families contributed so magnificently. Narrandes' first job was with the Ladysmith Municipality in Natal, South Africa. He left for the UK in 1966. In London, the author worked for three large companies, first for a garment manufacturer, Maxwell Cooper & Co, Ltd (Maxlim Maternity Fashions) where he managed and ran their computer department, followed by twenty years with Computer Services Centre (London) Ltd and finally for one of the major communication companies in the world, British Telecommunication Plc (BT). At BT he worked in various departments soon earning accolades as an outstanding problem solver. The author has brought to bear the same penetrating techniques and skills into writing, a territory, which he modestly confesses he strayed into by accident. The result is a magnificent socio-political work - one of the most original, creative and challenging in its genre.

Review :
"A fascinating chronology of the history of the Narrandes family in Natal South Africa. From their first steps onto South African soil, as part of the press ganged thousands of Indians who formed the indentured workforce, through the influence and positive effect 'The Brothers' had on local sports, education and politics. Eventually ending up in the modern day, the author's migration to the UK and his eventual serendipitous uncovering of Aunt Betty's secrets. The reader is taken on a twisting and turning journey of discovery, with more than a few surprises along the way that throw doubt on the accuracy of key historical events such as Ghandi's visit to Pietermaritzburg. I have no doubts that this book will take its place in history as one of the defining reference documents of South Africa's turbulent past." Fil Scibetta: Technical Director - Thomson Reuters. "The history of the Indians in South Africa is fascinating. With very good wishes." Pim Waldeck : Ambassador to the UK Ambassade van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. "...in the face of which our parents and their forbears performed all regular activities to make our generations' lives better. I must say thank you from the bottom of my heart to your Narrandes ancestors for giving their spark of progress .." Ramesh G Magan : Western Cape South Africa. "... Narrandes classic is a vital contribution to this time of remembrance. It is our story, of where we are coming from. We should display it prominently, and with pride, in all our homes." Aziz Hassim Author of award-winning book The Lotus People, Durban, South Africa. "On the surface, it seemed to be another composition of inherited history, but They came from India is sophisticated and comprehensive read, sprinkled with hard fact delivering a captivating account of life in a past long forgotten by our modern times. Reading the narrative, begs one to remember the true strength of the human spirit, in finding light even in darkness, and even happiness in despair. A read that is enjoyable, well researched and gentle characteristic of the author himself Narrandes' firmness, in his words brings about a compulsive read, hard to let down but enjoyable till the end." Vickar Indurjith: Validation Coordinator- Adcock Ingram, Johannesburg, SA. "I have read your book and find it a fascinating documentary. ... and we will not be able to do justice to the distribution of your book." Heather Hannaway: Publishing Manager - Shuter & Shooter Pietermaritzburg SA.
