About the Book

At last, the real story behind the financial crisis... The world's financial markets are in meltdown and everyone wants to know who is responsible. Some believe it started two weeks ago with the unfortunate demise of the CFO of Sheol Trading, the world's largest and most feared Hedge fund. Others believe it started much longer ago - 5,000 years ago to be precise, when Gilgamesh ruled Mesopotamia. But what does this have to do with Duncan Bottomley, an ordinary accountant? And why is he attracting the attention of an overzealous combustible woman, a walking corpse, demons and a Chihuahua with an attitude problem? Amid the confusion, it will fall upon Duncan to save the world from the hostile take-over to end all take-overs. A hilarious read from start to end, full of dark and clever humour. If you like your humorous books (think Douglas Adams, Robert Rankin or Terry Pratchett) then you will enjoy reading this. "A comic story on the sinister fall of the Global Financial Markets. The Devil really is at the bottom of all our woes." ... An Investment banker.

About the Author :
Mr Mills is an Australian who went walkabout in his twenties and thirties and has found himself stuck in London since. After a spell of working for American Investment banks he decided it was time to quit the financial industry, otherwise lose his soul. It was this experience that formed the kernel of the idea behind Hell Bent on Success. Since completing Hell Bent on Success he has spent time writing for television and is currently working on a young adult book series, which has nothing to do with banking. With that said, he wrote Hell Bent on Success to be a trilogy and with sufficient goading he intends to finish the trilogy.

Review :
Slightly silly but extremely entertaining story. Mills is genuinley witty and although it's target audience is the City don't let that put you off, I had hedge funds explained later but not really knowing what they were detracted nothing from my enjoyment. I agree that fans of Robert Rankin and Douglas Adams, maybe also Chrisopher Moore will enjoy this. I hope Mills keeps writing I stumbled upon this book when I was looking for something funny to read while I look for another job (thank you financial crisis). I really enjoyed this book. At first I didn't like Gilgamesh, but by the end of the book he was definitely my favourite character. Funny book and I loved the VSF units (you have to read the book to understand). If you like your humorous books (think Douglas Adams or Robert Rankin) then you will enjoy this. This is a shortish book and darkish, but clever humour. It's a kind of good vs evil set in big business but also suggesting the battle between good and evil is one of a hostile takeover. As a giant hedge fund seeks to dominate the market based on little more than smoke and mirrors, an agent of Purgatory is on the case. Trouble is, he is a bit, well, dead. And rotting. And it's hard to get your case over when you have worms crawling about. It has been suggested this is in the style of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett and that is a good point, there are elements of both writers in this as we get a surreal story with more than a few in jokes about business and the eternal battle between good and evil. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. What a great opening paragraph! Really grips you from the start. A good read, that really stretches the imagination. Am sure there are lots of references and deeper meanings which someone who works in the 'City' would pick up on, so I would particularly recommend it to anyone who does work in the City. The humour is along the lines of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
