About the Book

This book tells the stories behind Panel D7 of The Quaker Tapestry. In the early 19th century many Quakers involved in business were at the forefront of the railway revolution. Edward Pease, a Darlington Quaker, with wool, coal and banking interests, provided the drive and financial backing for the world's first commercial steam railway from Stockton to Darlington. Three generations of the Quaker Worsdell family went from carriage design and building for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway to managing railway companies. Thomas Edmondson, a Lancaster Quaker, invented and supplied a simple but efficient railway ticket system in use on Britain's Railways for over 150 years. George Bradshaw, a Manchester Quaker, realised the need for clear and accurate information about railway services and began his long running guides, featured in two recent BBC television series. "'Just look up the trains in Bradshaw', said he, and turned back to his chemical studies." (Sherlock Holmes to Doctor Watson in the story, "The Copper Beeches" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

About the Author :
Chris Bullard Chris first became interested in railways when, at the age of 31/2 he was taken to see the royal train hauled by two gleaming "Castle" class engines. At the end of steam on Britain's railways he swapped his train-spotters anorak for that of a mountain walker. After a career in primary school teaching, he and his wife Mary moved from Birmingham to Kendal to be nearer the hills and mountains. He is interested in Quaker history, particularly how Friends' Quaker faith impacted on their lives and work. Chris is currently a Trustee of the Quaker Tapestry in Kendal. Sheila Williams Sheila has been a member of staff at Kendal since 1998, responsible for the museum side of the Quaker Tapestry. She knew nothing about railway history until she project managed the 'Quakers & Railways' display within the Exhibition Room. Guided by her band of Puffernuts - a group of knowledgeable volunteers - she was very soon bitten by the bug and is now a railway enthusiast in her own right.

Review :
"This little book enlightens us on some of the ways that the Quaker ethic helped to stimulate the spread of the railways." Christian Wolmar (Author of Fire & Steam - Atlantic Books)
