About the Book

In "The Laws of Evolution", Sacha Haywood contends that Darwinism (or its later incarnations, neo-Darwinism and the Modern Synthesis) is an old and outdated theory which relies on a single lawlike principle - natural selection - to account for the origin of species. A new scientific theory is proposed, based upon the concept of universal laws, which associates the evolutionary process with two laws: developmental determination and natural selection. It sees the way development proceeds as a genuine lawful regularity, i.e. as something that, like the principle of natural selection itself, can be described as a universal law.In light of the framework of the laws of evolution, the author examines in detail the elusive question of the developmental origin of evolutionary novelty. Several lawlike principles are thus presented, and put to the test using a number of examples gathered mainly from the evolution of clutch size in birds. The same theoretical framework is also exploited to draw inferences on the rise of complexity in the universe. The result is an astonishing series of nineteen major evolutionary transitions, spanning from the Big Bang, through the origin of life, to animals endowed with consciousness.
