About the Author :
Joy James is a self-confessed craft-a-holic, having crafted nearly all her life. She has taught several different crafts, both privately and for a further education college where she was also an internal verifier for the City and Guilds Creative courses. She taught Patchwork and Quilting at OCN level 2 for the college and it pleases her greatly that the ladies still meet several years later. She still teaches private groups now and again. Joy first discovered soap making whilst working as a Marketing and Events Assistant for the Made in Lancashire Art & Craft Initiative. One of the members (thanks Sue!) made soap and it intrigued Joy no end. Sue gave her a bar of patchouli soap and Joy was in love. When Joy had to leave that job and move to Derbyshire with her husband due to a change in his job, she decided to have a go at making soap whilst looking for a new job. She was hooked from the word go and hasn't stopped making it since. She now has a very clean family and set of friends...

Review :
An inspiring and straightforward introduction to soap making. The book includes just the right balance of technical detail, scientific explanation and practical advice to guide the beginner soap-maker. In addition the step by step instructions are complemented by numbered photographs which clearly illustrate the soap making process. It is written in a friendly, helpful style, showing the experience of the author, and building confidence in the reader to have a go. The photographs and styling show case a high-quality end-product which would satisfy those who wish to create home made products as gifts. Andrew Hoskins This publisher has a fantastic series of books on a great many crafts; however, "Make Your Own Soap" is a topic I've wanted to know more about for some time. I purchase handmade soaps and have always admired the craftsmanship of well made soap. Not only am I looking for quality ingredients and a soothing scent, I also want my soap to look like a bit of artistry went into it. This book will help you achieve all of these things. This book is a wonderful resource for a beginner soap maker. It gives readers the basic steps to making soap using the "cold process" and walks you through it from the very beginning. Everything from equipment needed, an explanation of base oils, additives, fragrancing, and colouring to the final clean up, it is all covered! The photographs are excellent illustrations of method and will assist you with the process. Supplies needed are easily identifiable and my favorite part is the "troubleshooting" section at the end. Does your batter look curdled? Have your additives sunk to the bottom? There's help with that. Overall, a valuable addition to any craft or hobby enthusiast's book shelf. Melissa Legacy Excellent. Less is more for this book. My very first attempt - worked wonderfully. If you're new to soaping, then this is where to begin! Jools R (from Amazon.co.uk review) Thought the book was very good, and easy to follow, I have made one batch and intend to make another very shortly. Bubbles (from Amazon.co.uk review) I received this book as a Birthday Present and just love it! It has easy to understand instructions and has good clear pictures to help you make your first bar of soap using the cold process. I can't wait to have a go and would thoroughly recommend it. It's a handy size book too - fits easily into your handbag to read "on the go". Mrs Clark (from Amazon.co.uk review) The book was shipped promptly and received in excellent condition. I have found it to be informative, well-illustrated and very helpful in understanding how to make my own soap. It is short but complete and worth purchasing. Deanna Gail Fenton (from Amazon.co.uk review)
