About the Author :
Jeremy Miles is a maritime was admitted as an attorney of the Supreme Court of South Africa and gained partnership with leading South African law firm Garlicke & Bousfield Inc (Durban) where he specialised in marine law. He also has a post-graduate diploma in maritime law. He joined North of England P&I Association in 1995 and subsequently became a director of North Insurance Management Limited. He left the Association in 2005 to return to South Africa, where he now works for Phoenix Shipping (Pty) Ltd. Katherine Birchall is a solicitor who qualified as a solicitor with leading maritime law firm Norton Rose in London where she worked for over five years before joining the North of England in 1996. She is now an associate directors of North Insurance Management Limited and works in the club's FD&D department, handling a variety of charterparty, new-building and sale-and-purchase disputes. Peter Scott qualified as a solicitor with leading maritime law firm Clyde & Co in 1993. He had previously worked in a port agency for nine years before gaining an LLM in maritime law from the University of Wales, Cardiff. He joined the North of England in 1998 and has considerable experience in the field of P&I claims resolution. The North of England P&I Association, with offices in the UK, Greece and Hong Kong, is one of the leading international mutual marine liability insurers with over 55 million GT of entered tonnage. Founded in 1860, the Association has long recognised the importance of providing practical loss prevention advice to its members, believing this to be the most effective way to reduce the number and scale of claims.
