About the Author :
John Brignell devoted a career to measurement in science and engineering, but took early retirement in order to write about the abuses of measurement in the larger arena. Following an apprenticeship at STC he went on to take bachelor's and doctor's degrees of the University of London. He joined the staff of City University London and eventually became Reader in Electronics (1970-1980). He then joined the noted Department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, where he was Professor of Industrial Instrumentation for twenty years. His work was recognised by election to the Fellowships of the Royal Society of Arts, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Measurement and Control. The InstMC awarded him its prestigious Callendar Silver medal in 1994. Earlier books were Laboratory on-line computing and Intelligent sensor systems. He has also contributed about 120 scientific papers and book chapters. He abandoned this work in order to air his concerns about the abuse of measurement in the media and politics. To this end has developed his own web site (www numberwatch.co.uk) and published the book Sorry, wrong number! The abuse of measurement.

Review :
Get this book. It affords infinitely more entertainment than a month of insipid TV situation comedies. Alan Caruba, Warning Signs. What a pleasure to read! James Le Fanu, Medical Correspondent, Daily and Sunday Telegraph. One of the best reads I have had in a long time. Philippe Guyard, University of Portsmouth. A treasure. I read a little every morning at breakfast and am enjoying it. S Fred Singer, President, Science and Environment Policy Project . Should be required reading for students of statistics and for all postgraduate students. Dr B. M. Craven, Reader, Newcastle Business School, University of Northumbria. A superb book. Secure Computing. Students of economics should read this book, if only to view number crunching with a little less conviction and a little more scepticism. Journal of Economic Issues. A healthy scepticism is the outcome - what better mindset for the preservation of modern democracy? Times Higher Educational Supplement.
