About the Book

Memoir of a World War II RAF Wellington bomber pilot, concentrating on the period August 1942-May 1945. The author's aircraft was damaged and crash-landed behind enemy lines in northern Libya and after a struggle to survive in the desert, he and his crew eventually he became prisoner of wars. The author describes horrific experiences at the hands of the Italians in Libya, followed by his move Italy and ultimately to eastern Germany. The book is a personal account but also includes the stories of many unsung heroes and other comrades in the camps, based on very much research the author has made in recent years, contacting survivors in several countries and their relatives. This previously untold story ends with the liberation of Stalag IVB by Russian troops, witnessing the confusion as the Third Reich collapses and the author's eventual repatriation. An appendix includes the detailed story of one of the British camp leaders who was captured in the fall of Calais in 1940. Many rare illustrations are included.
