About the Book

This book is intended to give Project Management staff an overview of the Project Development Methods and some indication of how these relate to the various Project Management Techniques. It should be useful to Analysts, Designers, Programmers, Executives, Academics and Students, as an introduction to the more detailed understanding they will require of the methods. Projects are conceived and grow from a business need, but what seems clear at the beginning often becomes blurred and confused. In the end projects may not deliver what was expected and costly investment produces few benefits. The Project Management Procedures For Systems Development method described in this book provides a generic model product breakdown structure for an IT system down to the third level, which gives a starting point for project-specific planning. Just as architects need sets of standards to help them with their plans, so do Systems Analysts, Designers and Programmers. The book contains certain rules which can be used to develop systems. They are not a substitute for training and experience but a support for these. The methods must be applied with experience and common sense in different ways to different projects. Only well trained professionals can do this.
