About the Book

We have used the term "Rock" to embrace a huge variety of popular music from the 1950s to the present day. Our choice has been dictated by three aims: to include songs, familiar or not, which retain some passion after years of change in fashion. Secondly we have looked for a selection from the rich variety of the last 50 years. Lastly & most importantly we have been looking for tracks which sequence well. Each song is presented in a format which will allow you to make full use of the enormous musical resources at your disposal. This includes explanatory texts with many useful tips and graphic illustrations, to support the printed scores. These are detailed transcriptions which we hope will assist you in reproducing nuances of original recordings which are listed in the discography on page 110. We have included lyrics for those who want to sing along, but give suggestions for instrumental versions. In just a few cases we have transposed songs or slightly re-arranged backing tracks where the originals would be awkward to input from the keyboard. Rock music is endlessly adept at re-cycling itself and each new performance of a song has something fresh to add to the original. Remember that a printed score is more of a snapshop than a definitative version and is often little more than an afterthought for many rock musicians. We hope that creating your own unique performances of these songs will not only be hugely enjoyable, but will also lead you, as it has lead us, to a greater understanding of the music itself and how it is put together.
