About the Book

George W. Beldam was one of the world's first systematic action-photographers (a phrase coined by him). He photographed the great champions of the Edwardian era in golf, cricket and tennis, and also took the first ever photographs of the art of jujitsu. In addition he was himself a scratch golfer and first-class county cricketer who, apart from the more usual county matches for his Middlesex and London county sides, also played for England on a number of occasions. A true polymath of his times he was without doubt one of the age's great amateurs in not one or two, but several spheres, and above all others, perhaps, in photography. An active scientist and heir of the Victorian revolution in industry, urged on by a desire to improve his own game, he went on to become the chief architect of all the most memorable cricketing and golfing pictures of Edwardian times, while his water-colours, spanning 50 years of sea and landscapes, disclose the Royal Academy exhibitor behind the famous photographer. Called "The Human Machine" and "The Great Wall of China" for his scientific and methodical defence of the wicket, his private life, with his three wives and six children, was in complete contrast to his cricketing persona. A man of great passions, imbued with the relentless obstinacy of the inventor, he loved sport, people and nature in equal measure.
