About the Book

Teaching of Architectural History in Schools of Architecture with special emphasis on the integration, or the influence, of history into the design studio is examined by experienced academics from a number of disciplinary and pedagogic perspectives. What is, or should be, the relationship between the teaching of architectural design and the teaching of architectural history? As with any form of cultural expression, the nature of architecture depends crucially on its relationship to the past, and this relationship will always depend on the way in which the subject is learnt. The questions posed in this book, most immediately concerned with architectural education in the 1990s, are thus inseparable form the question of what architecture itself is, or should or could be. The contributors represent most of serious thinking about history, and the inseparable subject of theory, in British schools of architecture. The papers range from art history to English literature; most are architects, some practising, and all but two are, among other things, history people at their respective schools. These pages testify to a vigorous heterogeneity of voices and positions, yet at the same time seem to show an assertion of shared values that are threatened in the education system as a whole.
