About the Book

An introduction for young readers to black men and women who are heroes of their time. Some are from the past, some contemporary, but all have overcome obstacles to make significant contributions. The book is based on the premise that all children need to know about black people that have made important inventions, created works of art, excelled at science, music, medicine and sports, and have been leaders of countries, in order that black children in particular have role models they can identify with. It is hoped that the accomplishments of these black heroes may help children realize that they too can overcome obstacles and reach their goals. People that are included range from Ira Aldridge to Aretha Franklin, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Ida Wells and Shaka Zulu.
