About the Book

The great English novelists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries--Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Dickens, George Eliot, Hardy, Henry James, Conrad, Lawrence--take as their central theme the love of man and woman as that is fulfilled in marriage. They hold their place because of the depth of judgement with which they can show us life as it is, with marriage in a central position. Professor Crick (unfashionably) accepts both a "great tradition" of the novel and the importance of the love of man and woman and of family life. He asks a question, raised about Shakespeare in an opening chapter, that must be very disquieting for anyone who with him takes these books as embodying a kind of wisdom about the most essentially human of relations. Why do so many of these novelists so consistently give the love of brother and sister or father and daughter priority over that of man and wife? Why is the latter so often treated as so dangerous that the former should be preferred? Professor Crick pursues the question with close attention to a number of the most firmly established novels, and comes to some surprising conclusions, such as that Conrad makes a similar critique of his predecessors to Crick's own, and that the only one of the novelists of our great tradition who--inconsistently, intermittently but triumphantly--does real justice to the place in marriage of sexual and family love is D. H. Lawrence.
