About the Book

A case study is a vehicle for learning. It can be briefly defined as: An account or description of a situation, or sequence of events, which raises issues or problems for analysis and solution. For the purposes of this guide I have adopted a rather loose definition and have regarded as a case study any description or account of events that can be used to foster learning. The terms 'case' and 'case study' will be used interchangeably in this guide although some writers draw a distinction between them. Cases are now widely used in many areas of education and training. The focus of this guide, however, is mainly on their use in business and management education and training. We shall consider the use of cases at both under-graduate and post-graduate level and also look at their role in supervisor and manager development programmes. The 'case method' is associated, in particular, with the Harvard Business School, where the analysis and discussion of cases is the predominant mode of learning, and case development is a major focus of research effort. Cases were introduced into Harvard's business administration courses in the early 1900s and the first book of written cases appeared in 1921. Cases were already widely used in the study of medicine and law. Their introduction within the new faculty of business administration was rooted in the belief that here, as in medicine and law, Harvard was in the business of training practitioners. The education and training of doctors, lawyers and managers alike requires the development of both knowledge and skills. Not only must they know things - they must also be able to act effectively in their respective professions. To this end, the study of cases taken from the real world in which trainees are soon to practise makes an effective and enduring contribution. Cases come in a variety of forms and are used in a number of different ways, as we shall see. But a case is only one element within a case learning system. If that system is to be effective we must also consider the other elements within the system. This we will do as we consider how to use cases to bring about learning, and how to write cases that facilitate this process.
