About the Book

Tea drinking has become a worldwide pleasure, habit and custom - many would say a necessity even - since the seventeenth century, when it was first brought to Europe from China. It was in the 1860s that British pioneers first opened up the country in the beautiful island of Ceylon to plant tea, which quickly replaced the ailing coffee crop to become the lifeblood of the local economy. After 1948 and independence for Ceylon as the new state of Sri Lanka, the tea plantations moved into local ownership and soon the Sinhalese controlled the fast-expanding industry which, working alongside the British, they had done so much to develop. Maxwell Fernando, with his long and practicalexperience of the Ceylon tea trade, first introduces his readers to the delights of the local scenery, strikingly illustrated by Ranjith Perera's colour photographs, and traces the background history to the period of British colonisation, describing the courageous and determined enterprise of the early tea planters who first developed the essential transport and communications systems on the island in the nineteenth century. Going on to cover the whole process of tea cultivation and manufacture, including grading and tasting, he explains the unique geographical and climatic conditions which give Ceylon tea its special characteristics and world-wide reputation. Early labour problems, market fluctuations, changes in the auction system and the complexities of land reform and nationalisation following independence are all discussed as is the social and economic development of Sri Lanka following changes in theworld tea trade. As traditional tea drinking was challenged by other beverages, the industry responded by competing with value-added varieties such as flavoured tea and ready-to-drink tea, and new methods of packaging and promotion, as the industry looks to the future. MAXWELL FERNANDO comes from a well-known west-coast Sri Lankan family and was educated at the Roman Catholic St Joseph's College in Colombo and then at Aquinas University College wherehe studied economics. Soon after Sri Lanka became independent in 1948 he joined Heath & Company, one of the foremost tea traders, as a trainee tea taster, and for the next fifteen years studied and mastered every facet and nuanceof the trade and the skill involved in selecting tea to suit the buyer's taste.
