About the Book

Until two decades ago, fossil reptile and bird eggs were a minor curiosity of the fossil record. Now they are the focus of study for several groups of palaeontologists, amongst whom the author is one of the principal workers. In this monograph, Dr Mikhailov combines some twenty years of his work and that of others into a synthesis of our knowledge of the structure and diversity of fossil eggs. This monograph not only represents the first compact account to illustrate the detailed structure of the eggs of dinosaurs, other extinct reptiles and birds, but is also the first to be able to identify most eggs to dinosaur groups with reasonable confidence. It is copiously interested with SEMS's of the microstructure of the eggshell, the various types of which permit the eggs to be grouped into egg-families, genera and species. All of these are listed and those from the Cretaceous of Mongolia are described in detail.
