About the Book

Filling a gap in the literature, this volume synthesizes what is known about binge eating and its treatment. Representing a collaboration of experts from various fields, the book describes the history of binge eating and examines the controversies surrounding its definition and classification. Chapters consider binge eating from the perspectives of bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, obesity, and addictive disorders. Methods for assessment are examined, and the efficacy of drug treatment, short-term psychological treatment, and psychodynamic psychotherapy are evaluated. This volume is one of the first to propose "binge eating disorder" as a category in DSM-IV. Two practical manuals show how to conduct a standardized interview for assessing eating disorders and how to provide cognitive-behavioral treatment to those who binge eat. This book will be of interest to psychologists, psychiatrists, dieticians, and others concerned with eating disorders and their treatment.

Review :
"This book is as original as it is important. It breaks new ground and is absolutely must reading' for professionals working with eating disorders or obesity. This book will lead the field into a new generation of both treatment and research." --Kelly D. Brownell, PhD, Yale University

"It is strongly recommended reading for any clinician who plans to treat binge eating individuals or to address problems of appetite in a clinical setting." -"-The Journal of Nervous & Mental Disease"
"It is not often that a book for clinicians and researchers offers a comprehensive examination of a single symptom which shares several diagnoses. By focusing on binge eating from the perspective of the symptom from differing diagnoses, and by examining it as a phenomenon in and of itself, the contributors to this edited work provide an enriching and instructive resource." --"Eating Disorders"
.,."a wonderful resource for all clinicians and researchers in the field of eating disorders." --"Journal of Adolescence"
"This reviewer anticipated a text academic and at times tedious in its reading. However, the editors and contributors have put together a volume of infinite value to the practicing clinician. From the introductory through the final section, presenting two approaches for assessment and management, it is a wealth of pertinent and timely clinical information. Logical in presentation and style, each section thoroughly addresses binge eating in its many forms and factors affecting its presentation." --"The Journal of Nervous & Mental Disease"

It will prove helpful bothin case-conceptualization and in improving care." --"The Addiction Letter"
"The authors have succeeded in assembling a collection of integrated and highly focused chapters from a wide range of perspectives. Chapter authors cross reference one another extensively, creating the impression of a true synthesis of ideas (no small accomplishment for a multiauthored text)....Most timely given the current movement to recognize binge eating disorder as distinct from other eating disorders." --"Doody's Annual Health Sciences Book Review"
"The book supplies just about everything a clinician or researcher could want in one volume on the topic, provided by the foremost experts in their fields; as such, it is a must for our bookshelves." --"Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention"
