About the Author :
Nancy J. Polette is professor of education at Lindenwood University, St. Charles, MO, author of more than 100 professional books, and an in-demand speaker at state and national library, gifted, and reading conferences.

Review :
Veteran educator Polette offers an elementary classroom resource of reproducibles designed to enhance student fluency and understanding of literary genres in a fun and interesting way. With about 100 games, puzzles, and quizzes, this book covers a wide range of children's literature from Mother Goose, Aesop's Fables, and fairy and folktales from around the world to Newberry and Caldecott award winners. The book is organized by genre so teachers may easily integrate the activities into a particular unit of study. Professor Nancy Polette has written widely to stimulate children's reading. She has designed this book to help busy teachers and librarians implement either introductory or culminating activities for any genre of literature. Each page is reproducible for classroom and educational programs only and carries the appropriate copyright information at the bottom of the page….Definitely recommended for public and Christian school teachers and librarians. Organized by sections such as Mother Goose, Aesop's Fables, folktales from various regions, The Classics, and Caldecott or Newbery winners, the book provides many reproducible sheets featuring cryptograms, word searches, and matching games. The Scavenger Hunt worksheets are particularly enjoyable and well done. These hunts can send a team or an individual to explore a Dewey Decimal number section in order to find a word that fits in the prepared fictional story. An answer key appears at the bottom of each page. By designing these creative games and quizzes, Polette has made it easier for busy librarians, teachers, or group leaders to bring some friendly competition to a literature unit. [A]n ably written and thoroughly entertaining collection of games, quizzes, cryptograms, word searches, scavenger hunts, plays and more, drawing their inspiration from classic children's books. As an interesting approach to many landmarks in children's literature, Books Every Child Should Know informs its young readers of more in-depth and observational intricacies of their favorite stories in a fun and active way. Books Every Child Should Know is very highly recommended to all classroom teachers and homeschooling parents as a curriculum supplement, as well as to public library children's book collections for its engaging format for use with children of all ages.
