About the Book

The use of neurotoxins as tools to study neurodegenerative disorders is explored by both basic and clinical scientists in this text. The emphasis is on whether or not exogenous or endogenous neurotoxins may be part of the natural etiology of neurodegenerative disorders. An in-depth analysis of the potential mechanism of action of various neurotoxins, including MPTP, methamphetamine, kainic acid and several other excitotoxins, and the cholinergic neurotoxin AF-64A, is featured.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Pathologic and Clinical Features of Neurodegeneration: Theories of Neurodegeneration, D.B. Calne et al; Neuropathologic Features of Parkinson's, Huntington's and Alzheimer's Disease, Lysia S. Forno. Part 2 Potential Modes of Action of Selective Neurotoxins: Ca2+ and Cell Death, Pierluigi Nicotera and Sten Orrenius; Role of Free Radicals and Peroxides in Neurodegenerative Disorders, Gerald Cohen; Mitochondrial Mechanisms of Neurotoxicity, William J. Nicklas et al. Part 3 The Relationship and Importance of Animal Models to Clinical Research: Antioxidative Therapeutic Strategies for Parkinson's Disease, Ira Shoulson; Midbrain Dopaminergic Cell Loss in Parkinson's Disease and MPTP-Induced Parkinsonism - Sparing of Calbindin-D28k-Containing Cells, Dwight C. German et al; Excitotoxins and Neurodegeneration in Vitro, Dennis W. Choi; Cholinergic Toxins and Alzheimer's Disease, Israel Hanin; Effects of Amphetamine Analogues in Primates and Rodents, George A. Ricaurte; Neurochemical Responses to 6-Hydroxydopamine and L-Dopa Therapy - Implications for Parkinson's Disease, Michael J. Zigmond et al.
