About the Book

A comprehensive text and indispensable reference for all arts managers. This book delivers a broad, comprehensive wide-angle view of theatre and performing arts management, based on the premise that all the performing arts share the same core issues: producing or presenting artistically satisfying works in accord with their missions, finding and keeping an audience, providing for the financial and creative well-being of an organisation or production, and maintaining good personal and public relations. Beyond addressing management issues specific to legitimate theatre, the book also deals with broader issues that affect all of the performing arts: mission statements, legal organisation and structure, not-for-profit organisations, personnel, place of performance, budgeting, box office/ticketing, fundraising, marketing, public relations, advertising, and performance management. In this thorough, informed and informative updating of Stephen Langleys classic Theatre Management in America, Conte addresses the needs and concerns confronting 21st Century managers.

About the Author :
David M. Conte is a theatre manager working on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. He is also an experienced manager of musicals on the road. Additional credits include work in regional theatre and touring international ballet and opera companies. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama. Stephen Langley (1938-1997) was a pioneer in the field of Theatre and Arts Management. His ground breaking book Theatre Management and Production in America combined with his graduate program in Performing Arts Management at Brooklyn College/City University of New York set the standard of training and professionalism for the field. He was a member of the City Universitys doctoral theatre faculty and former president of the Association of Arts Administration Educators. He was the author of other QSM titles: Producers on Producing and Jobs in Arts and Media Management. Langley bequeathed rights to Theatre Management and Production in America to colleague David Conte who has revised, updated, and expanded Langleys classic.
