About the Book

The famed Yogasutra of Patanjali has stood the test of time. It is the most famous and important instructions in the field and, at the very least, it dates back 2,000 years and probably more. Sutra means "thread." The term refers to a tightly condensed statement. Patanjali compiled a systematic and comprehensive manual on the science and art of meditation in a series of sentences that reach to the very heart of the spiritual life. Devadatta Kali's commentary endeavours to draw out the meaning of Patanjali's text in a coherent and modern form that will serve today's needs of the spiritual practitioner. He has, also, included the original Sanskrit text for those who seek a more in-depth understanding of the hidden dimension of the Yogasutra, giving a word-by-word analysis with multiple possibilities for the meaning of the text. In addition, Devadatta Kali provides his own original interpretations of the meaning of several of the sutras. He sheds new light on their classical interpretation, which have often missed the point by overlooking the language of metaphor. This book is thus a spiritual tool for the lay practitioner, while offering a path to deeper scholarship for those who choose to pursue it. It is an invaluable overview of yogic philosophy and language and, at times, a controversial and innovative interpretation of this most treasure classical text.

About the Author :
