About the Book

Faith-based institutions yearn for more than business as usual, and Echoes of Insight, invites you to listen again to the older, forgotten, and perhaps even ignored voices. Echoes of Insight offers brief summaries of several thought-provoking writers from the last century and encourages a new, vigorous conversation about Christian higher education. Some of those authors include: Alfred North Whitehead, Dorothy Sayers, Flannery O'Conner, John Henry Newman, Abraham Flexner, Hannah Arendt, Karl Jaspers, and Maria Montessori.

About the Author :
Patrick Allen is now professor of higher education and Leadership at George Fox University. He holds a PhD in the history and philosophy of higher education from the University of Oklahoma and is the author of Morning Resolve: To Live a Simple, Sincere, and Serene Life. Kenneth Badley currently teaches in the department of education at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. He is the author, co-author, or co-editor of many textbooks and academic works, including Faith and Learning: A Practical Guide for Faculty (co-authored with Patrick Allen).

Review :
"Clear, engaging, and a welcome challenge to think beyond the familiar landmarks." -David Smith, Director of Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning at Calvin College "Higher education can get caught up in a game of change, unaware of subtle compromises being made to achieve sustainability. Echoes of Insight provides compelling ideas for reimagining faith based education. By balancing "Glitz, Glue and Hope," institutions can consider how remaining anchored in their strengths can provide greater longevity." -Deana L. Porterfield, President, Roberts Wesleyan College and Northeastern Seminary "This eclectic account of eleven gifted thinkers about education resists the modern vogue for flashy academic innovation. Instead, Echoes of Insight looks toward the past-not with sentimental nostalgia-to uncover a rich heritage of wisdom." -Susan VanZanten, professor of English, Seattle Pacific University "Educators-including those involved in Christian higher education-are part of an ancient practice and craft. As such, there is much to learn from those who have insisted that education in liberal arts and the humanities matter. Patrick Allen and Ken Badley have engaged ancient and more contemporary sources and in dialogue with them provided contemporary teachers and administrators-those called into higher education-insight in the art of teaching, but more, guidance for the mission and curricula of universities and colleges that are resolved to form women and men in wisdom." -Gordon T. Smith, President of Ambrose University
