About the Book

Clematis have long enjoyed popularity in gardens large enough to accommodate them. Now, with the arrival of a new generation of cultivars that excel in mixed borders, containers, and other small spaces, there is more reason than ever to grow them. As well as being modest in height, many of these new clematis are extremely floriferous and self-supporting in a wide range of garden situations and they are joined here by a selection of classic species and cultivars that perform well. The clematis featured in this book are hand-picked for their longer flowering periods, large flowers and resistance to diseases. Internationally renowned clematis breeder Raymond Evison recommends the best clematis for particular situations, such as containers, mixed borders, patios, deck gardens, hanging baskets, and balconies. Clematis associate well with a variety of other plants and the author lists suitable companion plants and explains how to achieve a compatible mix of colour, shape, and other characteristics. This unprecedented book celebrates a new generation of clematis and will appeal to both established enthusiasts and beginners.

Review :
Evison selects varieties [of clematis] based on their flowering season and finds a host plant or a support that would benefit from free-flowering clematis. After ogling the color pictures of hundreds of varieties in this book, it's hard to think of one that won't. -- Adrian Higgins Washington Post 20071206 Whether you're a clematis connoisseur or a budding amateur, you'll soon share Evison's enthusiasm for these new garden classics. -- Diane Speros Flower Gardens 20080401 An easy-to-read reference that is a must for beginners to the most experienced gardeners who want to use these beauties in their gardens. -- Nancy Szerlag Detroit News 20080128 A clear and easy-to-understand review of the genus, especially useful to garden designers, landscapers and garden centre plant buyers. It is also a valuable reference work for anyone needing help to choose a clematis for a specific situation or time of year. -- John Hoyland BBC Gardens 20080201 Easy to read, full of practical advice and beautifully illustrated with 150 photographs, Raymond Evison's book clearly demonstrates his depth of knowledge and enthusiasm. I enjoyed and recommend this long-awaited book. I am sure it will appeal to everyone, from professional gardeners to keen amateurs, who admires such a sociable and worthwhile genus. -- David Jewell The Garden 20080701 A sumptuously illustrated, deeply informed book that features shorter-growing, disease-resistant and long-flowering clematises ideal for borders, patios, decks, hanging baskets and even indoor containers. -- Bill Scheick Dallas Morning News 20080808 Raymond Evison is the King of Clematis. ... Full of helpful advice and planting combinations, the book is a must for any enthusiast. Independent (London) 20080907
