About the Book

The first book to survey the entire mint family (Lamiaceae or Labiatae), which includes a surprising variety of plants long valued for their herbal and ornamental uses. It features chapters on history, uses, cultivation, and classification, and includes a catalog of species and cultivars in 67 genera.

Review :
[Lawton] creates a satisfying overview that delves into plant lore and medicinal and herbal uses and details botanical characteristics. Gardeners will enjoy Lawton's recommendations for cultivated varieties of plants . . . and treasure the lengthy final chapter, which brings together a thoroughly serciveable guide cataloging 65 genera of garden-worthy specimens with common names, plant origins, and size and description of each species. [Lawton] has done the herbal world a great favor by giving testament to the beauty and function of mints...a most rewarding work of herbal literature. -- Cynthia Boyd "Down To Earth" (10/02/2002) [Ms. Lawton's] voice throughout is personable and warm, and it is obvious that she has a genuine fondness for the plants she writes about. This would be a welcome book for any gardener or herb enthusiast on your gift list. -- Kathy Gibb "Grandiflora" (12/18/2003) A dandy reference and just plain fun to read. -- Dale Langford "Rocky Mountain News" (01/11/2003) A fascinating book for anyone interested in herbs, whether for their culinary value or their ornamental offerings. A lively, enthusiastic blend of both ornamental and culinary mints that delights the reader as much as the author. -- Joanne S. Carpender "National Gardener" (01/22/2003) An excellent work in the Timber Press tradition: scholarship . . . leavened with personal interjections. -- JoAnn Gardner "Herb Companion" (10/14/2002) An outstanding guide to a family that includes 67 genera from ajuga and lavender to basil and rosemary. Definitive. -- Cleora Hughes "St. Louis Post-Dispatch" (07/23/2003) I am grateful to Lawton for having undertaken such an enormous task, and I am glad to have this volume on my reference shelf. -- Rand B. Lee "American Gardener" (07/31/2002) If there are gardeners or plant collectors out there with a particular love for "Labiatae," this book represents probably the most comprehensive horticultural guide to the family. -- Jan Barber "Plant Science Bulletin" (01/13/2002) Lawton shares fascinating history and lore, the uses of mints in health and home, as well as gardening and cooking tips. -- Marty Figley "Michigan Observer and Eccentric" (09/26/2002) More than a memoir, the book provides down-to-earth advice on garden maintenance, composting, successful seed germination, and much more. -- Rebecca Sawyer-Fay "Country Living Gardener" (11/05/2002) She . . . raises mint appreciation to a new level. She provides detailed descriptions of hundreds of specific plants. -- Patricia A. Taylor "Trenton Times" (05/19/2002) Thanks to Ms. Lawton's research, we can be more aware of mint use in our society's household products, food, and plants. She has produced an excellent reference book for growing the mint family. -- Pat Kelley "Garden Forum" (02/03/2003) The book is a very well-done porpourri of the taxonomy, natural history, economic botany and ethnobotany, and horticulture of the mints. The first book to survey the entire mint family...contains very much information about growing, cultivation and use of this favourite group of plants. -- M. Fedorova "Thaiszia" (09/01/2003) The first book to survey the entire mint family, from rosemary to lavender to peppermint. This book surveys the history, uses, cultivation, and characteristics of the [mint] family's sixty-seven genera, and includes more than sixty color photographs. This fascinating in-depth look at one of our favorite plant families is full of surprises. -- Lynette Walther "Palatka Daily News" (07/12/2003) We are happy that mints have received a thorough treatment by such a renowned garden writer...We predict numerous accolades for "Mints: A Family of Herbs and Ornamentals." This book combines clarity, authoritativeness, and thoroughness in a manner seldom found in popular horticultural books these days. Written in a friendly and accessible style. Written to be understood easily by the average gardener, the wealth of information on this family makes it a useful reference as well to professionals. -- Leonard Perry "Perry's Perennial Pages" (09/26/2003) You will find facts, history, and an excellent dose of minty folklore for about 221 genera and over 3000 species in this book. -- Kathi Keville "American Herb Association Quarterly Newsletter" (07/18/2002)

A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
