About the Book

A strong children's ministry is the foundation for the future vitality of any church-whether it is a small family community or a robust neighborhood church. In The Most Important Space in the Church, Rita Hays emphasizes that evangelism and spiritual formation begin in the nursery. It is in the nursery that many visitors first interact with church members and experience an outpouring of warmth and acceptance-known as radical hospitality. By building a rich, spiritually rooted ministry with infants through two year olds and with their families, congregations establish a faith formation pattern that continues through all age levels. Hays presents both theological groundwork and practical applications for strengthening any church's ministry, beginning in the most important space-the nursery.

About the Author :
Rita B. Hays is a passionate advocate for ministries with children and has served as a United Methodist pastor to children for more than twenty years. She has taught Christian education classes at Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky. She has a BA from Mercer University, an MRE from Southern Baptist Seminary, and has a D.Min. from Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Hays is now associate pastor for children's ministries at Connell Memorial UMC in Goodlettsville, TN.

Review :
is is the best book I have seen on this topic and is an essential tool for pastors, education work areas (with insights for all of educational ministry), nursery committees, nursery workers and expectant parents. Rita Hays shares her passion for and commitment to congregations seeing ministry to infants and young children as vitally important. She tackles di cult issues like how and when we discipline children in the nursery and explores the human and spiritual development of young children. She explores biblical and theological assumptions that underlie this ministry and emphasizes Wesley's understanding of God's grace at work in our ministry. She also includes clear and comprehensive lists of concrete things congregations can do to be in ministry with "little ones" and their families. The Most Important Space in the Church is engaging, practical, theological, and biblically based. I highly recommend it. -Linda J. Vogel, Professor Emerita and Senior Scholar Garrett-Evangelical eological Seminary
