About the Book

NMR Spectroscopy in Psychiatric Brain Disorders is the first book written about in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy in psychiatric brain disorders. This technique has great potential applications for mapping regional brain chemistry and metabolism, especially as they are related to mental illness. Because very few journal articles have been published in this area, this book is a pacesetter for the existing state-of-the-art research in this field. The contributing authors represent all groups in the United States who are working in this specific area, which is expected to grow significantly as more academic centers acquire the necessary equipment and trained personnel. This book is immensely valuable as a scientific body of knowledge and will serve as an excellent reference and research guide.

Table of Contents:
In vivo 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMRS) of the limbic temporal lobe in schizophrenia. The study of glutamate and schizophrenia via in vivo proton MR spectroscopy. 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy study of metabolic alterations in schizophrenia and neurodevelopment. 31Phosphorous magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the human brain in schizophrenia. 31Phosphorous magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P MRS) in schizophrenia. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies in psychoses: psychopharmacological studies. Applications of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in vivo to investigate sodium lactate infusion. Measurement of brain lithium levels by in vivo lithium (7LI) magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) of choline in brain and red blood cells: effects of lithium therapy by Edward F. Domino, MD. 19Flourine magnetic resonance spectroscopy (19F MRS): a new tool for psychopharmacology. Free fatty acid (FFA) release in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Index.

Review :
"A great deal of thought and organization has gone into the construction of this compendium, and I recommend it highly for anyone interested in both NMR and psychiatric disease."-- "Contemporary Psychology" "This book lets us glimpse the beginning of applications in the major disease categories and will be invaluable not only for those who wish to begin this type of work but also for those workers who wish to intelligently read this emerging literature."-- "Fritz A. Henn, Ph.D., M.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, Stony Brook Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, Stony Brook, New York"
