About the Book

This two set volume aims to provide insight into the fracture and failure of composite materials, dealing specifically with the characterization of impact damage and the prediction of damage resistance in composite and laminate materials. In many engineering applications of co mposite and laminate materials, damage and failure can be caused by impact of various types. Low-velocity impact is potentially dangerous as it can produce sub-surface damage which may not be visible. High-velocity impact produced by projectiles, shock waves and fragments from exploding ammunition is a dynamic event, leading to the penetration or perforation of composites. All impact is detremental to the mechanical and structural performance of composites. Evaluation of the damaged state and an understanding of the effect upon the resultant properties are needed for the proper design and application of composite materials. The strain-rate dependence of material behaviour, fracture propagation and energy-absorbing capacity are also important to the material science and structural mechanic perspective. This book aims to cover these topics and provide a reference on recent developments in the field.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Impact damage and ballistic impact: impact damage characterization; impact damage; resistance and tolerance; ballistic impact response. Part 2 Strain-rate effect, energy absorption and modelling: strain-rate effect; impact energy; absorption and crashworthiness; modelling.
